SAN DIEGO – The Littoral Combat Ship Training Facility (LTF), operated and managed by the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) Detachment San Diego hosted the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research, Development and Acquisition April 18.
“Navy leadership’s interest and support for the LCS Train-to-Qualify strategy being executed at the LTF is critical to the program’s success,” said Joe Shifflett, LTF Director.
During his visit Assistant Secretary Sean J. Stackley saw first-hand the training systems used to meet Train-to-Qualify (T2Q) objectives for the crew members of littoral combat ships USS Freedom (LCS-1) and USS Independence (LCS-2).
"I was impressed with the quality of LCS trainers, the professionalism of the team running the Center for Surface Combat Systems Littoral Combat Ship Training Facility, and the positive reports from the crews of both LCS variants on how these trainers significantly enhance their readiness,” Stackley said. “This provides a good foundation to build upon as we improve the fidelity and increase the capacity of the training tailored for this new ship class."
The LTF is comprised of three components which can be used independently or in concert with the others to provide more complex training scenarios. Each section of the trainer replicates the basic layout and design of the LCS command and control, propulsion control systems and a bridge that includes video screens that can reproduce every one of the U.S. Navy's homeports in addition to almost every routine port of call around the world.
“The LTF provides a unique capability for surface warfare training with its ability to deliver basic, intermediate, and advanced level training in individual, sub-team, and multi-team environments,” Shifflett said.
CSCS, part of the Naval Education and Training Command (NETC), is a lead command in the development of surface warfare training in support of the Maritime Strategy.
