What's Doing off base in San Diego

‘Morris Louis Now: An American Master Revisited’ opens at Museum of Contemporary Art
With an exceptional output of mature work that spanned little more than 10 years, Morris Louis played an essential role in shaping post-war American art. Organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Morris Louis Now: An American Master Revisited is the first consideration of Louis’ work in the United States since 1986 and offers a critical re-examination of this influential painter’s legacy. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 17- May 6, at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in downtown San Diego, at both its 1001 Kettner galleries and new Jacobs Building, across the street at 1100 Kettner. The San Diego presentation is made possible by the global financial services firm UBS.

“Morris Louis Now: An American Master Revisited will provide Museum visitors a rare glimpse of Louis’ work, which played a pivotal role in post-war American art-making practices,” said MCASD Curator Stephanie Hanor.

Featuring 27 canvases produced from 1951 through 1962, Morris Louis Now examines the work that defined Louis’ career and contributed to a critical turning point in American art. Louis worked in an innovative manner by “staining” the canvas with thinned acrylic pigments, using intense, rich washes of color to create unified compositions. Although he worked in isolation from other artists, Louis’ work is often grouped together with that of Color Field painters from the early 1960s, who were part of a trend that developed alongside Abstract Expressionism.

The exhibition will include examples from three significant bodies of the artist’s work. The Veils (1954, 1958–59) are noted for their complex washes of color, which emerge principally as bands at the paintings’ edges and are often compared to natural phenomena such as light, air, and water.

The Unfurleds (1960–61) have streams of intense, opaque pigment that flow inward from the sides over a white background. The Stripes (1961–62) series features sequential strips of pure color that create a rainbow effect.

Take the Admiral’s Fitness Challenge and win lifelong benefits
Does your base have what it takes to win RADM Hering’s Fitness Challenge? Only if you get involved! Sign up and get fit today. It only takes a small change. Instead of telling yourself you can’t, tell yourself you can. The Challenge is open to all active duty military, military family members, retirees, reservists, DOD civilian employees and contractors.

In conjunction with the President’s Challenge and HealthierFeds Physical Activity Challenge, Navy Region Southwest is going on full fitness alert through 18 March. The Admiral’s Fitness Challenge is a program that encourages all Navy Family members to make being active part of their everyday lives. No matter what your activity and fitness level, the Admiral’s Fitness Challenge can help motivate you to improve. As an added bonus, prizes will be awarded throughout the program, and if you complete six weeks of the program your participation will count towards your base’s success.

The Challenge is a fun way to start or continue physical activity that fits your lifestyle. There are no fitness requirements or tests to qualify, and with a healthier lifestyle as a reward, everyone is a winner! Each contestant will choose between the Active Lifestyle program (30 minutes a day, 5 days a week of moderate activity), or the Presidential Champion program (regular vigorous activity). Lifestyle activities may be as simple as walking, sweeping the floor, and taking the stairs instead of elevators. Adults are encouraged to participate with their children and teens to promote family fitness.

Registration and progress toward individual goal fulfillment is monitored via the President’s Council on Physical Fitness website: www.presidentschallenge.org No matter what your starting fitness level, you can earn points via a personal activity log that tracks your progress online and issues awards for reaching your goals. You choose your own activity level and set your own personal goals.

The winning base will be the one with the highest percentage of personnel registered who complete at least 6 weeks of the program. This is the same standard used by the President’s Challenge. Base competition inclusion is contingent on the enrollment of at least 100 participants so completion percentages are not skewed by low enrollment.
